Definately check out and learn spots in the daytime at various tides and stages of the moon. You'll have a good understanding of how the water and current works with/over various structure and how deep the water gets and what is acccessible. If an area is new to you and it is at night as much as you and others in the area (hopefully noone other than a possible fishing partner is around) may hate to and you want to wade out to a perch or reach some breakers or something, use your light in the water. Don't go crazy with it, a controlled beam near the water right at your feet and where your next steps will be. Better than rolling on a rock breaking a leg or expensive gear or stepping into water that is too deep. Don't worry about spooking fish. If you do it properly it shouldn't really bother them at all. I and others have caught some very nice fish after doing this.
