There are fish year round in Rhody too. Not just power plant outflows either. These fish live and spawn in RI/MA and return yearly (maybe never going too far in the first place). Lots of people fish year round in RI. The Narrow River, Great Salt Pond, Seekonk River, etc. If you are willing to put a little time in you’d be amazed what you can find. Not all the fish are small either. I’ve never caught anything huge but I’ve been surprised by a mid-teen fish on occasion in January or February and I’m sure there are much larger fish in there as well. Lots of theories about warm, sunny days warming the flats and making the fish active have been written and just aren’t really true. These cold water fish aren’t lethargic and slow either. They are very strong and actively feeding even when the water temp is in the low 30’s. I’ve had my best luck on dark nights in moving water. Really the only limiting factor during the winter is your own tolerance for temperature, wind and weather (and sometines ice). It’s really worth checking out if anyone has any interest. I’ve been poking around for about 3 winters now and originally got turned on to it by the stipermoon group. There’s a lot of good info on Ken’s site about winter fishing in RI.  |
