Im guessing your talking about a plug that you turned.

If your using maple/ birch or some other type of hardwood, including anything that is less dense. You absolutely need to weight it. A tail weight & a belly weight towards the head is typical placement. Take a look at some turned plugs that you own, often times you can see where the belly weights were drilled out. You could go as far as to pull out the thru-wire to understand what size tail weight they used in relation to the size of the plug.

Adding weight will effect the action of the plug. & will allow you to get some distance with your cast. The perfect action will only come with testing. & don't base your findings on a bathtub test. Dont ask how I know....

I seal the entire plug once all the holes are drilled. Once dry, I put in the belly weights & tail weight with 5 minute epoxy. Once cured, prime & paint. Clear coat or epoxy. Then assemble plug with eyes, thru wire, lips or whatever else.

Good Luck
