Big blues just love to break stuff. If you walk the beach a morning after a day of blitzing blues you'll often find plugs littering the shoreline.
Could other fish be nicking your line while you're fighting the fish you have on? It's a common cause of lost gear when fishing for aggressively feeding bluefish.
Myself, I'd go up to 20# test if you're fishing mono. Fishing for blitzing bluefish isn't usually finesse fishing.
