The fishing off Newport has really gone downhill in the past couple of weeks, so you're not alone in that experience.
Fall bass fishing is always dependent on the bait, in particular baby bunker and we don't have much of that in Newport right now. A few weeks ago when we had it, as you noticed, it was great around here. NE and E winds are almost always bad for Newport and this recent blow was no exception. We're hoping some steady W, NW, and ideally SW winds will bring things back to life.
Sluggos are a soft plastic bait that has become very popular over the past few years, mostly because they are thought to look like an eel which is a deadly bait for stripers. There is some discussion on Sluggo like products here:
