Depends what you're trying to catch (schoolies versus big fish) and when, but Newport is kind of tough right now for bigger fish. Then again, if you were to poke around a certain harbor in the dead of night, there's literally thousands of schoolies blitzing in the shallows.
Jamestown is somewhat similar.
I'd go further North (for now) and consider scaling up your offerings, although it's rare that the J-minnow can't catch fish. Big flies are what I'd be throwing as well. Especially throwing surface plugs, be sure to get up early. Real early. I commonly launch at 4 am this time of year, earlier if I want to run North and fill the tank with pogies.
The other benefit to getting up early is that the fish near shore in the relative shallows do not take kindly to being run over. If you can beat the crowd, it'll increase your odds. |
