What's a good fit for my reel? Hi, first post here.
Background: I've been casually fishing all my life in South Florida, but have never accumulated any technical knowledge of my gear or the gear that's out there. Just always used what my dad bought me as a kid or friend's gear.
Two questions:
I recently got a light spinning combo, the Phlueger President (Medium action, 7'0", 1oz, 6-12lb test, 6740) combo for some beach and inshore fishing. Someone broke the tip off the rod, so today I purchased a replacement rod, the $60 Shimano Carbomax CMS70M ("Fast action/Medium power", 7', 6-14lb test, 1/4-3/4oz lure) but wonder if it's the correct type of rod. It's basically got the same specs, but I went to the Shimano website and it's listed under their Freshwater Rods. Should I just return it?
Second, is it doable to just use the broken Phlueger rod by clipping off the remaining tip end and use the second guide as the tip? I know water would get in the rod, but it's already broken, so maintenance isn't really a concern. Or is this something that is fixable? Throw some epoxy on the tip? It seems like a bad place to break a rod and then expect to be able to fix it, but I'm looking for suggestions. And of course I'm losing the performance characteristics of the original rod.
Finally, any suggestions for a different replacement? The store also had a couple decent looking Penns - a Pursuit ($45) and I think an International Inshore ($80).
