Default SWE Fishing Report 4-11-08

It's here.

The 2008 Fishing Season has officially begun and this is the first of many SWE fishing reports to come this year.

The year is beginning, as it always does with a trickle. Frogs are croaking, plants are blooming and Reports of "pre-schoolie" sized micro bass are coming in from all the regular spots. A recent turn in the weather has led to a few peaceful evenings out there on the water.

Matt Perry writes...

"Spring is here... The weather this week is a sure sign on what is to come. At all your favorite holdover striper spots the fish should be moving around much more with the water temps getting around 45 degrees. Were seeing fresh fish at the west wall although not in great numbers yet. There are also reports of a few catches at first and second beach in Newport. We have stocked up on tsunami shads and storm shads that are sure to increase your success with these early season striped bass. Both 3" pearl tsunami shads and small bucktail jigs seem to be getting it done."

Matt's report is spot-on for what's to be expected this time of year: maybe nothing too exciting yet, but there are positive signs. Reports of a strong showing of herring and other large baitfish as well as the squid drawing ever-closer all point to the possibility of larger fish showing up in force in due time. Of course, any number of combinations of wind and weather could transpire to prevent this from happening. But with that said, it is a fresh new season and hope does spring eternal. For now we can all be content that the cycle has indeed begun anew. The bass are here and increasing in numbers daily and there are plenty of empty rocks out there just waiting to be occupied.

We shot a little bit of video we also thought you might enjoy. It's not the most exciting of films, but after a long time it sure is good just to be standing at the waters edge listening to the sounds of the surf.

All the best in 2008 from The Saltwater Edge Staff. It should be another noteworthy year by all accounts. As always, we're here for all your saltwater angling needs. Just give us a call, shoot us an email, or swing by the shop.
