this is not advice from an expert but I've been using PC Wood Petrifier to seal my wood w/ no problems so far, it soaks well into the wood, I usually go with two dips(immersed in a ziplock bag for as long as I feel necessary) and cures(light sand between for the grain raise) it's quick and it seals everything up tight and takes paint well, it's a waterbased product so there's minimal "danger" and easy to use and I won't burn down my house/garage with fumes or spontaneous combustion...
