A lot of the flies I use are already weighted so they essentially get themselves down in the water column.

I think the split shot could work in some situations, but isn't used very often. Some of the saltwater fly fisherman cast long distances with big flies. The shot could certainly effect the dynamic of their casts. Also, especially for the boat fisherman, they need to get the line (as well as the fly) very deep quickly. It wouldn't suprise me to see guys hooking up 30 or more feet down.
