Default A Little AdVISE...

What vise do you guys use for tying saltwater flies? I have one I used during my freshwater days. It should work the same I imagine. I know it can handle the bigger hooks anyway. Are there some basic differences that I should be aware of when starting out.

Thanks in Advance.

Chris, Whatever vise is in your budget make sure it has a 360*rotation, that will accommodate hooks up to 4/0.
I have been using for many years the Griffin Odyssey with cam-lock jaws.

I have a Nor Vise - and it is the most fun / productive vise you can image

The great thing about the vise is the visability of the fly / hook -

Totally unimpeded

And it ties/ spins quickly

One of ythe best investments I ever made was my renzetti saltwater vise.10 yrs old I use it almost every day.Takes 9/0 hooks from my canal jigs no problem i've done hundreds of em,just keep the jaws parralel.I gave up on tail hooks rusting i just keep tyin em.like leaders I do em in bunches. Also i got this thing where i thro smiling bills 1.5's I lose tons of em so I am constantly tieing. No if i can find a white tail of any kind i'd be good.Spend the extra money parts are replaceable although I have never broke anything. My vise sits on the edge of the computer desk.it's nice an claming.

Default Another Nor Vise Aficionado?

I too, am the proud owner of a Nor Vise. It was purchased up at a fishing fair YEARS ago. I've never tied saltwater w/ it but have put it too good use on all types of freshwater flies.

It really is a productive vise. You get that thing spinning and you can really turn out some flies. We used to tie a lot of scud-type flies w/ chenille bodies and it was great for winding everything including the weight, chenille, and any kind of hackle.

Default Automatic Bobbin

While I'm at it... I feel the need to sing the praises of the Automatic Bobbin that came w/ my Nor Vise. It really works great...

Thumbs up

Trekker! Smooth rottion, easy set-up and you can twist the hook into a pretzel if you like- it is NOT moving!

Default One word, one vise.

REGAL

No adjustment, bulldog grip, rotory (not true rotory), squeeze for hook insertion/release.

Regal is my choice I agree with Murf! It's great for flatwings and it has a new head for the bigger hooks up to 14 /0 hooks ! ouch !
