montauk 2008 update as with most of the striper coast montauks season is in full swing. during the last two weeks both quality and quantity have been had by shore anglers. so far i am aware of at least one 40 and a just two days ago 50 beyond the numerous 30's. in addition i have heard of a yet to be confirmed 49lber taken this evening. judging by what i just experienced this is likely true. speaking of which after experiencing an all out bluefish blitz today i returned to the light tonight with high hopes some nice fish would move in. of all places i stopped by the gas station for butt's and there learned that a friend had just stopped for ice with the supposed slob. all juiced up i made my way to my favorite spot to find near perfect conditions with the days sw blow still holding. immediately i was into fish and after the first hour had landed progressively larger fish to a conservative high 20's. at that point the wind began to shift to the north and it became difficult to keep my 1205 in touch with the mackerel zigzag i had been using. knowing the amount of life around i decided to risk a mint blurple bm 3oz i had brought, it was the right move. despite the wind i managed some impressive cast and continued the bail job on fish mostly in the mid 30" range. of course knowing what had ensued earlier i had hopes to hook large and indeed i did. at about dead high, say 40 minutes before slack i landed a nice fish in the low 30lb range. then, a few cast later hooked what was by all means a massive slob....it was setting the hook on a rock....till the rock began making the slowest most exaggerated head shakes i have felt in a while. eventually she got her shoulders down and started heading for the block. now that i have you all excited i hate to say it but this is where the battle ends. for some reason despite the triple trebles the hooks simply popped out after about a 50 yard effortless run even with me backing the drag off. heart broken and dejected with not even a straightened hook for solace i stuck it out for another 45 minutes and continued to pick teen fish every other cast or so. however, my window for large had passed and since i happen to have plans to slam large on the fly tomorrow i made haste for home.
word is the rest of the island is doing well, buddies of mine have had an epic and predictable top water bite in Jamaica bay for the last week and i believe one of them landed a fish in the 40' just a day or two ago
will post a couple pics i took of a fish in the high 20's tomorrow. if anyone is heading to mtk and would like some insight pm me |
