| NEWPORT COUNTY SALT WATER FISHING CLUB PO BOX 2 NEWPORT, RI 02840 February 2007 Newsletter Dear Member, There will be a regular meeting of the NCSWFC on Thursday, February 8th. The meeting will be held at the Newport Yacht Club on Long Wharf in Newport starting at 7:00 pm. “Tautog Presentation” Capt Bryan Oakley, long time club member and perennial high hook in the tautog category of the club fishing contest will give our club a presentation on “Fishing for Tog.” His seminar will include discussion of rods, reels, line, bait, weather, handling the cold, and bottom fishing etiquette. Bryan is a PhD candidate studying at the University of Rhode Island. He received a bachelor’s degree in Geological Oceanography from URI in 2001 and his Master of Environmental Science and Management degree from URI in 2004. His current work focuses on using acoustic technologies including side scan sonar, sub-bottom imaging and multi-beam bathymetry to map the habitats and recent (last ~20,000 years) history and evolution of Narragansett Bay. Other projects he has worked on or is currently involved in include short term and long-term shoreline change, assessing the impacts of storms on coastal structures, mapping on-land glacial geology, mapping habitats in Pleasant Bay/Chatham Harbor, MA, eelgrass mapping, and site selection for placement of dredged materials along the south shore of Rhode Island. Capt. Oakley holds his USCG 100GT masters license, is an avid surf and boat fisherman and boater, and currently lives in Narragansett. 2006 Club Fishing Contest Results There has been one major change to the results of last season’s club fishing contest. A weigh slip was miss-placed by one of our weigh stations and was reported at the last meeting. Chris Daniels entered a boat striped bass weighing 44 lbs 15 ounces on August 11th. This bass takes over first place in the boat division and is also the winner of the Edwards Trophy for the largest bass entered into the club contest. Congratulations to Chris and apologies to all other members in the boat category. Annual Dues Annual dues ($20) for 2007 are now due and payable at the meeting or by mailing them to the club at NCSWFC, PO Box 2, Newport, RI 02840. Salt Water Edge Fishing Show The annual SWE fishing show will be held at the Goat Island Hyatt on Saturday, February 10th, 10:00am to 4:00pm. Mark you calendar and be sure to attend one of the best fishing shows in the area. See you at the meeting. |
