Default Football Bluefin

Fished Tuesday for Footballs and had a fun day. Morning was pretty choppy, so we were trolling blind and only managed a couple of Bluefish. Wind dropped in the afternoon and we had a huge show. Bluefin everywhere feeding on top - good times. They were finicky as hell, keyed in on mini sand eels, but we managed one nice one. Here's a couple of pics - and yes, I stuck it when it came up - I needed the practice, and wanted to make damn sure it ended up on the grill.

This looked like early September out there - absolutely ridiculous to have this many fish in-shore in early July. This could be a huge season.

Jay, nice work, great to get one early. Did you use a smaller size bait?

Eric - no problem, glad you guys had did so well. I stopped by the shop and Pete showed me some of the video - outrageous. Hope you hit 'em tomorrow too.

CB2 - I tried going small, I make some 6" jet bars that usually do it when they get on the small stuff, but even that didn't work. Just got lucky by putting one bait long and deep and getting under the school a bit.

Chief - that's a yo-zuri bonita. Have to change the hooks on them - factory ones are crap, i straightened one on a giant a couple of years ago. With heavy split rings and good hooks, they are a good bet to troll under or behind your bars.

BTW - that photo is also a textbook on where NOT to stick a fish. Gotta keep it out of the bellymeat if its for market. I really do need the practice.
