Default sealing plugs

I have finished turnig drilling and am prepared to weight a run of atom jr plugs. I am following the method used in the new england fisherman. I think the weight that they are using seems to be a bit heavy but am not sure. I am going to do one in the weight they specify and see how it performs. My question is how do you seal the plug before you prime it. Does it make any difference what type of wood your working with? thanks charlie

Danny, go to the various plug building forums and use the search engines for all of the various ways to do it, as search here yielded val oil 50/50, but there's also thinned epoxy, boiled linseed oil and others,

I like something that will soak into the wood a little. Zinsser makes a lot of sealing products, use something they use for exterior. I don't get real crazy with paint. Shiny surfaces and real fancy paint is for us. Most everything is shiny when wet and while colors are important most baits have a white belly.

Just me but I use a 60/40 ratio of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. Fully submerge for 2-3 minutes let excess drip off, wipe down with rags to remove remaining excess (read rag disposal warnings) oils - hang and let dry for 3 days or so until fully dry.

this is not advice from an expert but I've been using PC Wood Petrifier to seal my wood w/ no problems so far, it soaks well into the wood, I usually go with two dips(immersed in a ziplock bag for as long as I feel necessary) and cures(light sand between for the grain raise) it's quick and it seals everything up tight and takes paint well, it's a waterbased product so there's minimal "danger" and easy to use and I won't burn down my house/garage with fumes or spontaneous combustion...
