Default What plugs and flies and where in J-town / Newort?

I have been going out and fishing the shores of Jamestown in my boat. I have been throwing a jumping minnow with a few rolls but no hits. For a fly, I used a sinking line with a large herring pattern with nothing. I can't find the bait, maybe that is the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Depends what you're trying to catch (schoolies versus big fish) and when, but Newport is kind of tough right now for bigger fish. Then again, if you were to poke around a certain harbor in the dead of night, there's literally thousands of schoolies blitzing in the shallows.

Jamestown is somewhat similar.

I'd go further North (for now) and consider scaling up your offerings, although it's rare that the J-minnow can't catch fish. Big flies are what I'd be throwing as well. Especially throwing surface plugs, be sure to get up early. Real early. I commonly launch at 4 am this time of year, earlier if I want to run North and fill the tank with pogies.

The other benefit to getting up early is that the fish near shore in the relative shallows do not take kindly to being run over. If you can beat the crowd, it'll increase your odds.

Thanks for the advice. When my 3 month old wakes me up at 4 am, I will change him and head to the boat!

Default up river

As for trying to find the bait. ITs all up river right now. try head towards bristol and hang out by the light house 2 hrs after high tide. Throw out one line with quarter of a pogie, and another line with a full squid. See which gets a hit first then stick with that bait. Last night up river was a feeding frenzy for all fish. I saw a beautiful 30lb bass caught on a half a pogy from shore. then i pulled a 30lb bluefish on the sand. so there is some krazy action up river.

You know the world record blue is 31.5lbs. If your really finding 30lb blues you'd better weigh them. 30lbs, 30inches long? Must have looked like an overgrown, rabid puffer fish . I guess I'll have to settle for the 34", 15lbers I used to consider big.

Default Big blue

I'm with you-blitzing 30# blues would be like a school of pirhanas-don't think I'd have the nerve to wade with them around
