And then to see Slappy paddle over to help you out of you situation only to see him paddle in just as tight to get a sluggo in there...well that made my day. He got in much closer than I was comfortable with! He put me into a few fish there, but like Jeff said, we were hoping for albies. The pic below was taken in the calmest safest spot that Robert showed me. I didn't want to take the camera out of the dry box in the other spots! rabiner.jpg Description: Filesize: 87.36 KB Viewed: 74 Time(s) _________________ Slappy the baitshop boy The Riddler NEKF Co-founder Joined: May 24, 2005 Posts: 3275 Location: The Peoples Republic of Winthrop Posted: Sun Sep 17, 2006 5:26 pm I like that stuff! But that surf is tame compared to what you guys were into when we saw you. _________________ Doing my fishy thing. slappy Sluggoholic Joined: Jun 07, 2005 Posts: 677 Location: Sluggoville Posted: Sun Sep 17, 2006 5:57 pm Pics sent. I broke a rod paddling down a wave! The water caught the tip of my rod and the wave pushed me so hard the top 2 ft snapped off. Expensive trip! I realized that it was only going to get bigger as the tide got going and I had a 2 hour drive ahead of me so I bailed after that. We should have gotten some pics of the gang of yakkers. That was a fun trip. You guys missed out on an epic scup bite. We pulled off it too soon in the morning looking for other fish. Something I will always regret. _________________ Slappy the baitshop boy Lefty Lord of the Phlies Joined: May 24, 2005 Posts: 2144 Location: Gloucester on the Island Posted: Sun Sep 17, 2006 7:21 pm You guys were nuts!! | Fright - Sorry that you are so bitter Just for clarities sake - I have never reported catching 40 lb bass in my yak - Hell a 40 lb bass in a kayak weighs as much as my yak- As for the photo stuff - I have brought the camera in the power boat to take pictures with my son fishing- and i will take pictures of him on fish - or the occasional tuna - or other interesting stuff that we might see --but I find that the visual picture my personal experiences -burned into my memory - and the incumbent stories that result from the occasion is usually far better * And as for a camera in the Yak - I don't bring it along - For two reasons - A - its really wet -and even in my dry box - I know that I am going to get it soaked - and B - and hopefully I don't sound like an ass here - but I fish for the personal pleasure - for the enjoyment of it - and really don't need to take pictures for me - and certainly not you. I am confident enough in what I saw - what I did - when I did it - how I did it- that I don't need to take a picture - If someone else is there with a camera- at the ready - thats fine -but I am not going to keep the fish out of the water until I get my camera ready- ( and i actually made a point of getting the photo's from Sat -me in front of that rock and the surf - as I thought the scenery was spectacular - and wanted to show others - and made no effort to have anyone take a picture of the fish - nor do i think that anyone took a picture of a bass the entire day - while they did take pictures of the oddities that they caught - like a scup - a black sea bass - and other unexpected fish ) *When my Dad first taught me to fish as a kid - he used to say that we were going to "catch the day" and I firmly believe in that philosophy - It is the experience - the time on the water -the scenery that you are able to view - the good times -the classic fuck ups- the bonding with whom ever you are with - that is truely what you are out there catching. - And per chance - should you be so lucky as catch a fish during that time- that is merely icing on the cake. | I know you're probably not in any mood to hear this recommendation, but if I were you, and I was fishing one of the premier striper spots in New England, and I was having a rough go at it, I'd be seeking out someone who know's their s--t or hire a guide for a few days to get some techniques. I started saltwater flyfishing in '01 after a decade of fishing trout streams. My first year throwing the fly in the brine I caught a total of 5-6 stripers; all but one came from a long weekend I spent fishing the beach at MV and one from my former home waters around NYC. I can't begin to tell you about spending night-after-night casting at North Beach Sandy Hook and getting the occasional fluke or sea robin. After years of vowing I'd never hire a guide, I broke down and started fishing with the younger guides from the Vineyard around '02. I now own my own boat, do fairly well and rarely get skunked. I've learned a lot from those guys and I still book one dude in particular on my annual trips to MV - not so much that I fear not being able to find fish on my own or that I need someone to hold my hand, but because on every trip I pick up something new from guys who spend an entire season on the water. Just a thought - not trying to push business for anyone. |

Zimmjas - are you an ex NJ'er ? I grew up down there - and spent many a day and night on Sandy Hook - ( some of which was even fishing ) Used to be alot of fun walking back from the tip in my waders - along the nude beach -One of the little pleasures of fishing into the late morning but I digressWhen I fish started fishing - if i was so lucky as to catch a fish - I would even go so far as to mark it on the calendar - and i can tell you there were not alot of marks Time on the water - asking questions - dealing with a shop like the Edge- where they will answer all of my questions - and more dumb questions - all improved my game

I grew up in Clifton and lived there until '96. Did a three year stint in Westchester county. Kind of miss having the Croton Watershed 1/2 hour from home, but with stripes, blues, bones, 'core, skippies, bluefin, sharks, etc. etc. I usually come to my senses. I had a buddy who lived in Highlands for a couple of years... literally about a 10minute walk to the drawbridge; absolute best possible crash pad after a night of fruitless tossing. My first decent bass was an 11#er that took a #4 deep candy while I was throwing to sea robins hitting silversides at Horseshoe Cove. Nearly had a heart attack watching the line flying out of the basket. That was after a year of fishing around the hook and that fish literally kept me from going back to freshwater fulltime. Total reason why I moved up here.

I grew up in Perth Amboy - ( on the more chemically bound water ) but later moved to Middletown - so i did alot of my fishing in and around the Hook Had a buddy that had the job of " Bay Keeper " so i would go out with him on patrol - and fish When we moved up here - i did stint with a guy that was an avid freshwater fisherman -and didnt know how to repay him for the favor- so i built him a rod - and built one for myself. My son and i would go out in our inflatable - off the rocks at NEB and fish - he would be spin casting -and catching something every time - and me just failing away I still remember the first time that something " pulled back" - had no idea what was going on- it pulled - i pulled - it pulled some more - trying to " trout set a hook" I learned alot in those days Broke that rod one day - so my wife bought me one from the SWE - and that started a 13 year addiction. And it is an addiction! Must admit that the shop and the folks that run it now are far better than some of the early ones - with the exception of Steve Cook - who my wife adored - and could literally sell ice to the eskimo's at a premium. Though he never over sold me - always steered me to the right stuff - and could spin fishing yarn like no one i have ever met. While the fishing season is a little shorter up here - the variety seems better - and a far greater ability to fish different locations - all in close proximity- makes it all the better

Best decision I ever made was to move up here. I originally wanted to move out to Cape Cod, but the prices and summer congestion made me think otherwise. I had a bud from work who lived in Portsmouth and helped me find a place here. I live 65 miles from work, but can't even contemplate moving closer. From Newport, I've got easy enough access to most of South County, BI, the Elizabeths and Vineyard plus right out front. I don't even know what the hell a spinning rod is Actually, I'm going to break down and buy 1-2 soon as I have a bunch of non-fishing buddies who want out on the boat this fall.
