Default Bristol Harbor

Drove by Bristol yesterday around noon and the bluefish were doing their thing

Looks like it will be the upper bay for a few days - with this weather pattern setting up

I am a new fisher this year. Total rookie! I have a boat, and realize no one wants to spot burn, but can anyone point me in a direction? A few weeks ago the blues were boiling lower bay in Newport, and were catching some really big blues, and a few keeper stripers. Now nothing!!! What happened? I heard that the bass fishing gets better in Sept. and Oct., is that true? I hear people talking about Sluggos and things like that, but don't know what any of it is. I have been bait fishing mostly with Pogies. had some small luck with plugs at night, but all were small. Any do's and don'ts you can give me as far as places, techniques, leaders, plugs, bait? Whatever you think is important? Thanks. Sorry, I am a fishing idiot, but I do love it, so any help is appreciated. thanks again.

The fishing off Newport has really gone downhill in the past couple of weeks, so you're not alone in that experience.

Fall bass fishing is always dependent on the bait, in particular baby bunker and we don't have much of that in Newport right now. A few weeks ago when we had it, as you noticed, it was great around here. NE and E winds are almost always bad for Newport and this recent blow was no exception. We're hoping some steady W, NW, and ideally SW winds will bring things back to life.

Sluggos are a soft plastic bait that has become very popular over the past few years, mostly because they are thought to look like an eel which is a deadly bait for stripers. There is some discussion on Sluggo like products here:

Plastic Eel Imitations

For all the other details, it might be worth starting a few new threads specifically addressing those questions in some of the other forums like Surf Fishing Gear, they'll probably get more play there. You can also stop by the shop if you want, we're more then happy to answer any questions you might have.

Default Newport fishing

Thanks Pete,
I have some reel eels, and Sluggos, and did not know what they were. Is your shop on Aquidneck Ave.? Let me know, I will be there. Is there any other area I should try to fish, seeing harbor is dead? Would you recommend out around the drive, past Castle Hill, or up the bay past Prudence, Bristol, Warwick, or maybe Sakonnet area?
