| Launched the yak out of Little Compton Sat AM - weather report was for 5 knts out of the south - and 1 ft seas - Was greeted to 10 knts - and 2 + ft as i rounded the breakwater-( incoming tide ) but what the hell - i was in my dry suit - and all rigged - so paddle i did As I paddled out - the waves were a bit steeper - ( I love the cockpit spray dodger - so i shipped very little water ) Got out towards the lighthouse - and worked the rocks with some top water stuff - and was immediately rewarded- first cast- with a double - one on the plug and one on the teaser - Paddled out to West Island ( RI's version of Stonehendge ) and worked the whitewater there - the swell was considerably bigger out there - and the stripers all seemed to try and tow me into the rocks - into the big swell - with me frequency having to stick the rod into a holder - and paddle my ass out of trouble - before releasing the fish Bite slowed a bit with the change of tide- which gave me an opportunity to explore a bit between some of the outcroppings - ( some beautiful scenery ) Paddled over to East Island - and worked the rocks there- a bit more sheltered- and was rewarded with a fish every few casts - nothing of huge size- 28's - 30's - enought to keep you busy Had one take of the plug by the largest bluefish - a seriously huge fish - that I have ever seen in my life = One nasty ass mother that towed me all around It was so large that i initally thought it was a small tuna ! - As i was reeling it in - it turned - and made a run at the yak - and rammed it ! a minature Moby Dick adventure it was that big- and being in the yak- getting rocked all about - made it all more exciting getting it off the hook- That thing was not getting in the yak with me to be released! - this was a water release all the way - ( and I was willing to cut the leader and lose the plug - it was that nasty )- thankfully we reached an accord - it calmed down - and i was able to release it- to go and terrorize another yaker somewhere Tide was running out - and I now had a long paddle home - in a building sea - and building breeze - ( Wind against current - solid 3's) so i called it a day Sunday - with reports of fast fish in the area - took the big boat out to go hunt for them - northerly breeze made it miserable - Was on reef at sun as the sun peeked over the horizon Nothing working on the reef Nothing at Seal Nothing at Gooseberry Nothing at Land's end Nothing off the nets Didnt see anything remotely interesting out front- no birds - no bait - nothing So i called it a day by 9 am ( Probably the next report will say it lit up at 915 ) Did have a remarkably wet ride coming back up east passage - with standing waves under the Newport Bridge as bad as I have ever seen them It's got to get better |

| Great report from RRabiner. Now that is what I am talking about. How big was the Blue? Inches or pounds? The bass you referred to, 28's 30's? Inches? Again, loved that report. Keep them coming everyone. I have not been out since last Thursday, but will report as soon as I do. |

| I had some time to get on the water last night right at sunset. Didn't see much bait nor any fish working any where around the base. I did manage 2 schoolies and a hook in my thumb to remember them by. The birds looked bored. I am still blaming the north wind.

| IT IS 2:30 A.M. technically, Wednesday morning, and just got in from 7 hour fishinf trip. I went out around Newport, Narragansett Bay. My friend caught 2 small blues, and I caught zilch, nothing, crap. I keep hearing how fishing is suppose to be better in September and October? Fishing was pretty good about a month or so ago, but since then, has progressively gotten worse, and worse. What is going on? Is this a bunch of bull to get us all to keep buying lures and bait, etc.? I must say, I am so disgusted after tonight, that I am done. Unless I hear the bass or blues or something are running like crazy at every corner of the bay, my boat sits, and so do I. I am so fed upo with the terrible fishing, it is just not worth it anymore. Sorry about rambling, but had to vent. Don't know if it's me, if I am fishing the wrong places or with wrong bait or lures, but can't figure it out, and no one seems to be able to help. So, after my trip next week, I am wrapping the boat and poles up till next year. Good luck all. Signed, "The Dormant Fisherman" |
