Post Why build your own rod

You can build your own rod for the same reason people tie their own flies, for the satisfaction you get when you catch fish with something you made yourself. I build a 9 foot 10 weight to fish the worm hatch this year, the rod performed flawless.

Default Guarantee?

I completely understand the benefits and appeal to building your own rod or having one custom-built to suit your needs.

I was wondering if any of the blanks come w/ some type of warranty? Once you begin to wrap is it automaticly voided?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Just curious

That is a very good question, one that should be considered before you start to wrap a blank. Most all rod blank distributors will give you some kind of warranty. This one is from Sage, Every new Sage rod, blank is covered by Sage’s lifetime, original owner warranty. Regardless of the cause of damage. Sage will repair or replace the Sage Product while it is still owned by the original owner. Before you think about building check the warranty for the blank.

most rod manufacturers will provide a warranty on the blank for a long, long time, if not forever. this usually only covers the original owner of the rod. now, if you build your own rod, and you break the rod somehow, then what usually happens is that you have to strip off the guides, and the company will send you a new blank. the reel seat is pretty much done, since it is epoxied on for good.

you should read the warranty carefully. most rod makers will warranty the blank if it breaks thru a defect during the manufacturing process. if you break the tip off in door to your house, then you might be out of luck. with that said, there are quite a few companies that will replace the blank even if it broke due to your own clumsiness.

Default Redington Experience

I have built numerous rods from Redington blanks, mostly 8 and 9 wgts. I did break the tip off of one of the 8 wgts on my first cast while bonefishing. I was pissed, but they totally took care of me once I got back. All you need to do is prove it is a Redington blank and they will send you a new blank to replace your rod. I ended up sending back the entire rod so that they could match the butt section with a new blank tip.

Highly recommend these guys, I think Sage bought them out recently...???

And rod building is not that hard to do, get the book by Louis Garcia "Handcrafting a Graphite Fly Rod" it has everything you need to know.

Default great hobby

Be careful this hobby is as contageious as fly tying. I got it so bad now I'm building my grips using birch bark and the results are beautiful.
