toby , maybe you can break free and hook up with me at montauk we'll do a little skishing !

the boots i use (dui) dive boots cordura sneakers are made to give you freedom of movement for swimming are super light and with 1/2 icnh of exposed spike cut through the heaviest barnical and mussel coated rocks !!!

i use a hi powered neck light around the neck with black surg tube head laps tend to get knocked in heavy surf . neck mount i think you'd have to loose your head first .

hey guys let me know if your in the montauk area !!!

I may be out there in the next few weeks Bill, I'll definitely track you down if it happens.

Toby, where did you find the Sporasub wetsuit, Block Island? That's one of the few dealers I know of. Sporasub's website has been under construction for years now and no one seems to carry them locally or online.

After reading this thread I figure I should chime in on what I do out there when Im bobbing around.

Ive been doing the whole wetsuit thing for about 3 years now, mostly in RI waters but have done some swimming on the cape and some of the islands too. I wear the same suit as Toby does, I love the thing. For Footwear I wear the Nrs Workboot, my freind Brad who is a Navy Seal recomended them to me and told me they use them also. On my belt I keep it simple VS pliers, SOG knife(best knife out there right know)and a jug of water. I only fish eels. I do the plastic bag thing and stuff them in a aquaskinz pouch. I wear to dive lights around my neck a red for fishing and a white for emergencies. Lately Ive been doing the skishing thing mostly of Pt. Judith as it is a place I know like the back of my hand. 2 years ago I was fishing a spot in Soco where I was about 60 yards out on a rock, I had a steady pick of bass up to the mid 20s. There was some waves coming in the had gotten a little bigger throughout the tide. Well long story short, I hooked a bass the I knew was a good fish, ended up getting knocked of the rock and had no choice but to land and release the fish in the water face to face with it. After getting towed around in the september rhody surf for about 10 minutes I had my hand in the mid 40 pound fishes mouth and eventually let her swim freely. Kind of liked it ever since. The one piece of advice I can give someone who is just getting started is dont skimp on the quality of your gear. Your out swimming freely in the ocean at night allot can GO WRONG out there. If you dont have the best of the best, knifes, fins etc. You may not be coming back.

Good luck out there guys. If I can think of more to add to the subject I will tommorow when Im at work

Ive just started wetsuit fishing and enjoy it alot. One thing I don't like - the underarm chafing from constant casting. I've tried it with and without a tee-shirt and doesn't help. Any suggestion?

I've heard of this but I can't say I've experienced it in any way. Maybe it's a wetsuit dependent issue? I've always been completely comfortable, no chafing.

Goosefish got it for me through Laptew's source a couple years ago. It's the same one he dives in.

Witchunter - I would love to give the skishing a try with someone that has been there before! Like I said, I do a bit of free diving by day, and wet suiting by night, so I am comfortable in the water. I think my one issue would be getting over the thought that I look like a seal bobbing around the night time surf. I bet a couple good bass would make that thought leave my head real fast though. Did you start out skishing by day? I have thought of giving that a shot a few times to get used to it, and then moving it into the night surf.

Kind of a dumb question, but would a dive flag be required to day-skish? I have been harassed by enviro cops before making sure I had a dive flag when free diving. I was told it is against the law to dive w/out a flag.
