Default Popping Setup For Tuna

Need some help on starting a rig to throw surface plugs at school BF. Anyone have any good suggestions for a spinning outfit? By the way, I fish Cape Cod Bay.

St Croix Premier SWS70MHF with a Budget depending, Shimano Stella, Shimano Spheros 14000, Penn 950ssg, Accurate Twinspin 30, VS 250 or 275.

Check out the SWS76MHF as well, same ratings as the rod capecodkid mentioned but a much softer tip.

Consider the Fin-nor Ahabs as well, the 20 in particular. The big drag on those reels will hold up to many repeated tuna. Very reasonable price for gear that can handle big school tuna more then once and at least as tough, drag wise, as all the top reels.

If you go VS, go right to the 275. I find the 250 to be a little slow for easily working topwaters and also when you miss your target it's much easier to get your line back in and back into the frenzy.

Thanks for the advice, has anyone had any luck with the bigger Quantum Cabos? I'd like to keep the outfit under $500 if possible.

What's a typical capacity (300 yards of 50lb. braid)?

What about the Fin Nor "Offshore" reels. Are they any good? Less money....

Probably good, and reports I hear confirm that. I've just never used them personally. Until I see something feel the wrath of a dozen or so fish, I just look at it suspiciously. A lot of spinning reels can land a tuna. Repetitively is a different story.

I'd aim for 300 yards. It's rare to see one rip off a run that far if your drag is set correctly and your rigging is sound though. 200 yard runs are extraordinarily rare as well with your average CCBay tuna.

I don't have any good info on the Cabos, nothing firsthand anyway. Reports are the drag is smooth and durable but that's all I've heard.
