IM NOT CRAZY. I believe thats what I saw inside of Sakonnet River couple days ago. Enormous splash right in the middle of Sakonnet river near Sandy Point. I thought it was a busting tuna. I have never seen anything like it, so I didn't dare repeat what I had seen. One of those things where you just had to be there. Some strange things happening.

Last August while a couple hundred yeards off of Land's End I was drifting along, motor off waiting for some sign of a hardtail when a hump back surfaced 50 feet from me and scared the _ _ _ _ out of me. 60 feet deep where I was. They do pass by the area apparently.

There was a minke whale on the west side of Block Island last week as well.

And Chief, NEVER discredit the idea of tuna in the Sakonnet. A guy I know saw a busting pod about that far up a few years ago.

No doubt whales come in darn close - probably not a right whale though. There are less than 300 of them in the North Atlantic now, and their migrations are tracked pretty closely. A large number of them winter over in CC Bay, but they have all Migrated North to the Maritimes by now - they are really cold water animals.

Could have easily been a Finback - they're bigger than the Humpbacks, and can tolerate some pretty warm water.

Anyway, Pretty cool sighting in there.

I've seen alot of whales including fin back, humpback, minkie, and even a few pilot. Back in the 70's and early 80's there were fewer regulations on proximity, we got right next to them often. This one came up within touching range of the boat, I got a good look at it. The head is/was very distinct. Looked it up when i got home, more than 95% sure that it was a right whale. Very unique head shape. Awesome sight.

Last summer, me and my friend seen some type of whale just North of newport bridge, outside navy base. It is ddeep there like 100 feet plus in the channel. I just caught it out the corner of my eye, and made a hard right turn was aotumatic reaction, because I thought I was seeing rocks, then realized, there are no rocks out here, then it went down, and I really did not get much of a look at it, but them my entire fish finder completely went solid with color, the entire screen, then it came back, so assuming it went right under my boat?
Did not see it again though.
