Are tides really that important for fishing around Newport? I know about the breachways, cape and rivers however; our tide swing is relatively small and I've caught fish from the same location at HT and LT. Especially for the more aggressive swimmer or waders, low tide seems to really pay off. Most of my preferred spots produce in the lower part of the tide, be it incoming or outgoing. I have one spot that fishes well on the incoming; right when it starts to get tough to stand on my rock due to the waves that's often when the fish go through. Go figure...
I think LT versus HT success is really dictated by the spots you fish, but for me, overall, on Aquidneck Island lower tides are my favorite. I without question fall into the more aggressive category when it comes to wading though. I feel I can cast to spots that are more productive that most others can't reach. While many people like to point out that the fish are often close to shore, I'd have to point out how many times from the boat I catch fish JUST out of range of the shore angler. I know they're there, and I know on shore (for the most part) we can't reach them. But they're there.
