Post What's your Smallest fish on a Bigger Lure

Hi Everyone,

What do Bigger Lures like the 3.5 oz Gibbs surface danny catch from the surf. I beleive in something like a Big fish (20LB +) will hit a smaller (4'' approx) Plug, but smaller fish won't hit a bigger (like 8'' ) plug. So if there are lots of smaller ones swimming but no Bigger fish around then should I end up with no fish using a huge lure. Whats the Smallest fish that you think you had caught till today for the size of the lure you fished.

I have caught fish over 30lbs on 3.5-4 inch shad type lures. And have also caught many schoolie sized stripers on heavy large lures over 7 inches. Big lure, big fish? depends. But for the most part the theory stands true.

Post Keep them comming

Thanks for the input everyone, so I guess the number of catches will be more with smaller lures than the monstrous lures ( for surf ). I have a rod rated for 3 to 8 ounce lure, is it okay to through a 3.5 Oz Gibbs surface danny from the beach and expect to hook a fish. I was thinking what fish will be after such a big lure assuming that there are no stripers in my place.

A rod rated 3 to 8 should have plenty of power for even the biggest stripers that might hit a big Danny.

I caught an 8" snapper blue on one of Mac's 3.5oz canal special pencils. Everything likes Mac's plugs!

Caught a six inch rock bass about three weeks ago on a three ounce needle. I thought I hit some debris on the way in. Pretty funny looking it was and we'll probably have to listen about that one for a while.

We had some rat bass mixed with some larger fish one night. Put an old Creek Chub giant jointed pikie on (13") in an attempt to avoid the small fish. It didn't work. Fish under 24" were all over it.

Default schoolie

A few years back I caught a 14 inch schoolie on an 8 inch jointed swimmer. He hit the middle treble hook and the rear one hooked his side.
