| i recently purchased two surf rods. what are reels/spool sizes do you reccomend for optimum casting distance, durability and saltwater intrusion resistant. whiil be using braids of 10 15 20 30. are the new van staals as bombproof as the older version before the buy out? | That 1023 is a lightweight, if you're going VS it's a 150 for sure on that one. The 1064 can go either way, 150 or 200. The Shimano Spheros would be my first choice on the less expensive end, with a 4000 on the 1023 and a 8000 on the 1064. For reels you really need to take a look at how water resistant you need them to be. The Van Staal of course leads the pack by far in the department with Penn Z series following behind but requiring more maintenance. If splashing is the only real concern the field opens up greatly. Shimano Spheros and possibly the new Daiwa Saltiga Surf are additional options. |
