what temps should we start seeing some fresh arrivals?might try 1st beach corners or barrington river tonite ,cant wait anymore

50 degrees. I would say is when the migration gets going. Fish can be caught year round of course, so I would guess that most of what is caught at the usual spots during the early season are holdovers that have dumped out of a nearby estuary. Or have traveled a short distance in search of food. I don't think its fair to say they are fresh arrivals. Sure there are fish arriving places where there havent been fish all winter, but I don't think they are true migratory fish.

They've been at the other first fish spot South of here for a couple days now, so they're probably already in Newport.

We were talking about it in the shop yesterday. Al Anderson believes these small early fish we see are holdovers from the Thames (so they ARE in fact migrants, sort of) and some are from local holdover spots. Makes sense to me.

As for water temp, I'm not sure it matters.

Water temp holds little to no importance marking fish arrival. They have just barely made a showing in South County. Myself and another angler fished a well known schoolie local for four hours. He managed three, I managed none simply because I SUCK . They maybe over Newport way, they may not be. That being said the water temp at arrival is typically in the low to mid 40s. For no other reason than this is the average temp in early April.

thanks for the imput.thought water temps might have something to do with the migration,now that i think about it if that were the case we probably would not have hold overs thru the winter.this is why ikick myself in the but for not keeping a log,if i didid have difinitive data to go back to

By the calendar date, April 9th was the day we started catching last year in Newport. Every day prior, not even a hit. Then, overnight, enough tiny bass and bait to catch them on topwaters.

exploratory in newport yesterday...condiditions seemed right but maybe not cause we caught nothing...still nice to get out at last
