Default kids set up

I've had my 10 year old son fishing for a few years now. He's ready to move up to better gear. My problem is what to get him. Ideally something I can use for lite action occasionally, thou if he should hook a 15 - 20lb fish i'd like him to have gear that he could land it with. Rod? reel ? any sugestions? He's about 4'tall, 74lbs

depending on how much u want to spend...id say something in the 8 ft range rated a 1/2- 1 1/2 oz for the rod and a reel like the shimano spheros or new quantums size mathed appropriately. both are around a $100 bucks, durable and fun to fish with. as far as rod makers it depends on price but honestly since you will be useing it id say spend the money on a loomis so that when he breaks (and almost inevitably he will) you can just get a new one. plus they will be great for your light tackle outings. there are however a multitude of rods to choose from at different price ranges, tusnami and tica being the cheepest though still good rods, st. croix being middle of the road

good luck in your search, let us know if you have any further questions and allways feel free to call the shop for specific questions

8 foot St. Croix, with a Shimano Spheros or Quantum Cabo/boca PT.
Great combo.

For comparison,
One of my first better spinning outfits was an Ugly stick/ Penn combo. Which I caught many fish on. It did the job. Took ALOT of abuse. I didnt know the difference between light or heavy action rods, graphite or fiberglass. Or what type of retrieve rate a reel had. I was fishing with my own brand new rod and reel which I thought was as cool as it gets.

Through all the neglect. I still use the reel from time to time. Which has never been serviced. I was taught to keep it bathed in 3 in 1 oil which probably saved its life. The Ugly Stick is collecting dust having been replaced with an arsenal of custom rods & St. Croix's.
