Default Replacement Hooks???

If a plug doesn't come with a split ring attaching the hook should one be avoided with upgrades, specifically asking about BM juniors and SS bottle plugs. I would also appreciate recommendations on size and models to replace hooks for Deadly dick's #2, a rear single for the BM junior, and front treble for a BM junior.

Thanks
lumo

On the plugs you're asking about I often do add split rings. Both of the lures aren't really prone to fouling even though the hooks hang a little lower with the addition of the split rings.

That said Beachmaster himself would frown upon me putting split rings on the Atom Jr. He recommends the old Mustads (which are pretty rare) or cut VMC's on all his plugs.

I generally hang a pair of 3/0's off my AJ's, but I'm sure many would feel this is one step too heavy. I know several guys that go with a pair of 2/0's. I think a 5/0 VMC siwash would be the right hook on the back for either sized belly hook.

Depending on what you're doing with that Deadly, a 1 or 1/0 VMC 9626PS treble would be my choice.

Deadly dicks would be for bouncing off the bottom, cast from shore for bass and blues, or if I'm lucky from a boat chasing tuna.

I cut the VMCs with fence snippers. Once on the plug, close them up and seal them with some nail polish. Check them often though. This is a weak point for corrosion. I'll change them out at least once a year. You can get the snippers at home depot, lowes or any other hardware store.

Default gotta be MANLEY

For cutting hooks I can think of no better plier than the Manley Super Pliers. DO NOT TAKE THESE IN THE SALTWATER as they will corrode. But if you need some cutters that will cut through 4 or even 6x vmcs LIKE BUTTER you need to give these Manley's a try. GREAT for keeping in your vehicle in case you need to cut a hook out of yourself or your buddy. A one-time $40 investment here will keep you from breaking or dulling your expen$ive Van Staal or Accurate cutters on hooks. Manley Super Pliers are to cutting hooks what the sports tool split ring pliers are to changing rings. Now you may all think I'm just talking up a product we sell but let it be known the SWE didn't always think so highly of these pliers:

After hearing tall tales about the cutting strength of these pliers we decided to donate a pair to the shop to disprove all the myths. Well we all came away very impressed. We've since cut MANY MANY hooks and once I even used them to put a new flat edge on a screwdriver that had been damaged. Come by the shop and ask to use our manly super pliers so you can see for yourself

PS: I bet this guy uses Manleys:
