Default Crippled Herring

I'm hearing that these crippled herring are an excellent jig. Anyone with success on these? Oh, and has anyone tried changing out the rear hook with a bucktail at all?

They work very well for just about any species. I like to jig the larger ones in deepwater off the boat and the smaller ones work very well for casting. I've had no need to dress them up but it never hurts. Just make sure you replace the stock hook with something else, a bigger siwash, treble, etc.

I've changed one of mine to a tube tail. I can't say that it was any better than without changing it but you never know.

Bigger siwash sounds best, but bucktail dressed. I'm going to try that one tonight or tomorrow. Not much luck with tins though, but I'm not giving up yet.

Grampy, I guess you stayed home the other night? I never thought of using a tube though, but hey, it sounds like it doesn't matter either way you use it.

Talking Tins R Us

I've had great success with the blue crippled herring, bluefish, striped bass and believe it or not I even caught a herring with a crippled herring!! Well I snagged it on a retrieve, but i still caught it!! The 2oz. version works well when the surf is not too rough, let it hit bottom and work the rod tip on the retrieve every few seconds....

I've had great success with casting it from shore. My only gripe is that the finish comes off way to easily.

I know at least a few people who swear by the Hopkins with the tube tail, so I can't see why a tube on a Crippled Herring wouldn't have the same mojo.
