Default VS problem

When I am fishing top water, pencils and spooks, the line keeps getting caught under the spool and wrapping around the spindle. Anyone else have this problem? Is it user error? I am using 30lb fireline.

What size reel? Fireline in particular is prone to that behavior, especially if the reel is filled to the brim, but usually in the lighter pound tests.

If it only happens with top-water maybe there isnt enough resistence...

depending on where you fish here's what I do...
hope your backing is on tight...

go to an outflow (preferably uncrowded, mid-day is best)
cast as far as you can with a darter/huge swimmer
freespool as fas as the current will allow.

grip line lightly with a glove, and reel it back on.
packs the reels very nicely.

My guess though you are throwing slack with it on the spooks/pencils

Thanks for the advice Hound. Pete it's a 200 with 30lb fireline I have a good 1/8 to 3/16 of spool exposed, so it is not over filled with line, This is my first VS and I did not expect to have this kind of problem with it.

It's possible that the spool is coming out too far. If the guy who put it together put it together wrong, sometimes the spool comes out too far. I've seen that before. My 200 with Fireline doesn't have any issues with Pencils or Spooks, so something has to be different.

The 100 series is known for sucking under Fireline when overfilled, but the 200 doesn't have that rep even if it is over filled.

So what do you think I should do Pete? The reel is brand new, will VS take care of the problem? thanks

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it. If it needs to be taken care of they definitely will.

Bring it by next time you're near the shop and compare it to the 200's we have in stock and see if the spool is coming out of the flyer any higher the ours.

On the 100, new Fireline is far more likely to get under the spool then broken in. Whenever I spool up with Fireline I can't WAIT to get a few fish with it to get it broken in. It's cranky stuff until it gets broken in.

I had the same problem with my 200. W/ Topwater stuff. 20lb mono though. Got it re spooled and took it out into a field and gave it a good stretch, before using. No problems since. Also switched over from Big Game to Backcountry.

With braid though, I would say to cast it around with some heavier stuff first before using pencils etc. And let the braid get worn in. And better yet hook some fish

May also want to check if there is any play in the main shaft...
