It's a preference thing. If you fish in an environment where your reel will get dunked in saltwater, scraped on rocks and take a general beating it wont last too long. Take care of your VS and you'll have it for a lifetime. Call the SWE and they can offer you a lot more info on the pro's and con's.

Thanks guys. I was just curious because I may look into getting a VS reel but may also want to get another rod (because my wife would wonder why I am buying a new reel only). At that price there is no way I could divulge the full price. What size VS Reel do you guys use for say a 9' surf rod? I do almost only surf fishing and have a 2 10' ugly sticks with Penn reels (so heavy) and a 7 1/2 ' St Crioux travel rod with an Okuma reel. I am looking for a 9' , 2, 3 or 4 piece rod (need suggestions on this too) and want to know which VS reel. Do you guys run the Bail or non Bail? How do you "flip the bail" on the non bail?

Yeah that would be the best thing to do, but I am outside of Philadelphia so that is one long ride. I will be up in the Vineyard in July but would most likely be passing through RI in the middle of the night so I do not think anyone would be there. Oh well. My wife would kill me if I got that reel and she found our how much it actually cost.
