Default Van Staal ...

I would go with the 200 - I have a 150 on an 8 foot Lami, a 200 on a 9' 6" Loomis, and a 250 on an 11" Lami rod. The 200 should be the best match for the 9 foot stick .......

I would go with the 200 as well. The 250 is only an ounce heavier, but it just seems a big step bigger and balances out best for me on 10 and 11 footers.

The 200 will be fine on bigger rods as well if you ever need or want to fish them.

Any chance for a lefty 200? Nevermind, I already know the answer. Pete, I should be in on Saturday for the 250.

i have a 250 and have used it on 7' 6" rods on the boat to 11' rods in the surf. as long as the rod is built for the purpose of the reel, you will be fine. as for surf rods w/ a vs reel, i've used my 250 on a 9' rod for years until i built a rod suited for it in the 10' range. it's actually 9'8". i also have a xra1205 (10') that will see time w/ that same reel. the point, think versitility. i knew i'd be using a 10' rod at times when i purchased my 250 and wanted that extra 1 ounce of weight and larger reel. that was more important than fitting my reel to the 9' rod i had at the time. if you plan to ever purchase a 10' or 11' rod, you may think about a 250. the 200 would work well on either as well, but once you get above a 10' rod, the 250 is better suited. i know anglers that used vs300's for years on 9'-10' rods. they wanted that reel and capacity.

so, just some points to think about when looking into that vs reel.
