Default Which reel would you suggest?

I have a St. Croix 10' premier surf rod and am looking for a reel. I'm thinking about the shimano spheros , but not sure what size. I will most likely be using 15 to 20 lbs test.

For that rod and line I'd go right to the 8000 size Spheros. It doesn't weigh much more then the 5000 or 6000 and it's not much heavier either, but it has more room for line, which you'll want when you're using 20 pound test mono.

I will second that. You want the 8000.

The 12000 is too heavy in my opinion. & 6000 not enough line capacity for mono.

Is your location correct. Minnesota?? Is this set-up for stripers/blues?

Mark; thanks for the info and yes that right Minnesota. I'm heading to Fort Meyer in Jan for a couple weeks but travel to Mexico as often as I can. Usually in search of bill fish offshore and want to try surf casting on the days that I'm not out on the water. It's all new to me -can't wait. I put that 8000spheros on my christmas list. thank for the help.
I thought I would try throwing an asortment of lures out there and see what I can catch. I'll take any advice you can throw my way.

Tie up some leaders now. Flourocarbon. Fishing down South I can notice a difference.
You cant go wrong with any type of shiny chrome like spoons. Or bright colored swimming plugs with shiny sides. Live bait still dominates though. I have heard and seen good things with prop bait type lures on various species.

Luhr Jensen's Woodchopper plugs 6 3/4" Prop Bait, might want to bring one of them....

But I would definately bring........

Yo Zuri Crystal minnows-
