Default Rod and reel Questions.

Ok got a Q and though it would be best asked here if i say it right :P.

Everyone keeps telling me that i wont be able to find a bait casting reel that can hold ALLOT of 35+ lb line and cast it as well. not only for trolling and such. So i was wondering if anyone knew of a bait caster that could cast 35-50+ and hold over 500 yrds of it as well?...

On the other hand rods. Iv seen rods that are not to long like my 11' rod i have that well realy is to big for me lol...im looking for a rod that is thick and strong but not long. Iv seen such things on the mad fin shark thing on espn but people keep saying there not for casting yet i see them casting them and others like them.

So yeah...if anyone knows of equipment like that please tell me ...

i would recommend trying a braided line like suffix. while it will require some adjustment time if you have not used it yet the advantages are numerous and a reel like the accurate boss magnum series will allow you much more the 50 yd cast with line as heavy as 65lb. in concern for capacity i dont have the specs but the smaller series which we have in stock should be able to hold apx 300yrds of 50lb suffix, possibly more. they do make a larger size which allow you any further needed line capacity all in a reel that is capable of putting some serious pressure on big fish...i've smashed many tuna up to 100lbs on their smallest models

hope this helps

and as far as the rod if i understand you are refering to actual boat rods possibly even with roller guides. i would not reccomend a rod such as these primarly due to their fiberglass consruction and excessive weight. maybe if you tell me what your shinking of doing i could recommend some sort of graphite rod with the length and power needed at a resonable weight

Well what im doing actualy is catfishing. I know what im looking at is most likly larger than i need as iv cought 30 pound chanels on 25 lb line and a muskie rod.

But realy im looking for something strong and thick that is not to long like the rods i have. Because with the size i cant cast heavy baits out like a large cut bait without the pole bending so far that when i cast it just slams it into the ground or in the case of spining reels the bail closing on me and me throwing all i have into the river... ....

The size of bait i use is a average size goldeye normaly 7 to 8 inches of the body not just a small piece.

Realy i dont know allot when it comes to heavy rigs lol...iv been trying to learn more but i keep being told these 11 foot rods are the way to go but being under 5 feet tall and under 100 pounds my self there not easy to hold lol...

Well hope that helps somewhat though im kind of tired so not sure if i typed it all right x.x...

what it sounds like would be best for you is a what we call a hatteras heaver or 8 n' bait setup. for thesurf there are a number orreels the most popular being abu's and reels like the aformentioned boss magnum and some model penns. the most distinctaspect are the rods, long and strong they range from 10-13 feetmornaly and are often called telephone poles. these are often fiberglass butrecentlynew graphite version are becoming availible. as the name suggest these rods are designed to cast as much as 8-10 oz of lead along with large pieces of bait, often chunks of a fish weighing a 1/4lb all far enough to reach an outer bar, well more then 50 yards.

the biggest concern remaining is that of rod length as while coastal anglers often have plenty of room behind them river and lake anglers like yourself may not. a sorter rod may be necesary

in addition most every quality 8 n' bait is custom made due to the difficulties of casting such setups.

last, you may want to look at either the bailess penn 704Z or thevanstall series of bailless spining reels, both of which will hold ample line eitherbraid or mono and yet negate thepromlem of bails flippingon the cast

Ok...i looked at the reel you said but it says holds 275ft of 20lb line or 285ft of 15 lb line or 350ft of 12lb line wich the top line there is well 10 through 30 pounds off what im looking at. It may be incorect info or something though i dont know it was just someone on Ebay so not a great reference lol.

Though i found something that shows the type of rod i wanted i think. Link below. Its the lsize i was looking for but it says allot of things i have no clue about lol so i need help :P. Basicly i dont know if that is something that would work for casting off shore (riverside in my case) or not. Id look at straight backend over curved though...

Penn seems to have almost everything i need...but unfortunatly its all way out of my price range lol. Dident think id be spending more money on a rod and reel than i did on my new video card on my computer....

So far actualy i found allot on ebay on the Special Senator Rods that are fairly good price...50-100$ even in good condition so thats better than the 1k $ i was looking at at first lol...But i dont know if these things are realy capable of what i need wich is as said before casting being everyone here keeps saying there all for trolling not casting....

Still not sure on reels though either because the same anser as with the rod from people i ask around here .

One thing i just read is saposably the Special Senator is saposed to be lighter than most others of its kind. But could be just something to get them sold i dont know....

the price range you mention seriously limits your options. senators are horrible for casting as a side note and the rods under that name are mediocre and heavy at best. also i can assure you that whatever reel you were looking at it is not the one to which i refered. try looking around this site as all specs will be current and i can assure the quality of the gear purchased. as you seem aware ebay is no place to do research and i might suggest that buying rods and reels off ebay is very risky as you have no idea what kind of abuse they may have been subject to at best

and all those measurements should be in yards not feet, remeber too that braided lines are much thinner. read prior post again in case u missed something
