Also, I don't know what most people use, but I use the D size rod wrapping thread to make bucktail jigs and siwash tails. I realize you guys specialize in fly fishing, and maybe no fly fisher worth his salt uses that, but I don't know any better.

Might need to watch eBay for a used one, I usually sell them at cost plus shipping just because they're so outrageously priced so it's tough to find them cheaper.

As for the thread, there's a certain thread that a lot of bucktail tyers use that they really like. I think it's just size A waxed Danville. Strong and it packs down nicely. Many use rod wrapping thread as well. As long as it's tough so you can crank down on the hair.
