Might need to watch eBay for a used one, I usually sell them at cost plus shipping just because they're so outrageously priced so it's tough to find them cheaper.
As for the thread, there's a certain thread that a lot of bucktail tyers use that they really like. I think it's just size A waxed Danville. Strong and it packs down nicely. Many use rod wrapping thread as well. As long as it's tough so you can crank down on the hair.
