Fishing today was nothing short of awesome for about the first hour. Say 4:30 till 5:45. Right after that sun came up and about twenty people littered the reefs and white water it went silent. As a guide I can't stress enough how an early arrival to the fishing grounds in July around Newport can help increase your odds of taking a fish on the fly rod over the 20lb mark. Many people ask all the time "what happened to all that action"? Well, the answer I think is pretty simple. Other boats, kayaks, divers and all the other things mother nature has to offer push the nighttime feeding fish out deep early and more so on weekends so get after it early.
