Saltwater Edge Travel: Berry Islands, Bahamas - Bonefish and more

Soul Fly Lodge, Berry Islands, Bahamas

November 6-12, 2022

April 15- 21 2023

The Saltwater Edge has two more visits planned to the new Soul Fly Lodge located on Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands.  This is a virtually untapped, high quality fishery with a reputation for big bonefish. This chain of over one hundred islands is loaded with quality habitat for bonefish, permit, triggerfish, mutton snapper, barracuda, and more. This trip will be hosted by Saltwater Edge owner Peter Jenkins.

The Soul Fly Lodge

Soul Fly Lodge and Cariearl Roost Restaurant

There are no other fishing lodges in the Berry Islands save the world class offshore destination of Chub Cay at the extreme southern end. Yet the Berry Islands are easy to access.  With the summer of 2021 the Bahamian government opened a brand new airport that serves as an official port of entry to the Bahamas and accommodates daily flights from Nassau and direct flights from Florida.
Soul Fly Lodge has four beautiful guest rooms with ensuite private bathrooms. Each room has super comfy beds and all the amenities you’ll need for a relaxing stay. Allowing you to rest easy and play hard.
The  Carriearl Roost is a restaurant associated with Soul Fly Lodge and run by a top notch Bahamian Chef. It features a full bar and cocktail lounge with indoor and outdoor seating available. The Carriearl opens to the public for dinner a few nights a week. I can tell you the food and especially the appetizers are awesome.

The Fishing

Vast and Pristine Habitat...

With Lots of Bonefish...

Rollin's permit

The variety of bonefishing elements in the Berry Islands will quickly grab and tightly hold your attention. From miles of tailing bonefish on firm, wadable white sand flats, to lush turtle grass, ocean edges, thick mangroves, and backcountry creeks, the fishing around Great Harbour Cay does not disappoint. Bonefish here range from 2 to 10+ pounds with average fish around 3 to 4 pounds.
And Other Flats Species...
The permit fishing in the Berry Islands is special. Permit can be found from Chub Cay to the south, all the way up to the north end of the chain. Our guides have been chasing permit for years and are prepared to help you intersect with arguably the toughest fish to fool with a fly.

Legendary Guides...

Our guides, staff and lodge hosts are all experts in their craft with experience that is measured in decades. They don't get much more legendary than Percy Darville the Head Guide at Soul Fly Lodge.

The Soul Fly Lodge Mission

Of note is the sustainability ethos of Soul Fly Lodge. They not only exist to access the tremendous flats fishing in the Berry Islands but also to be a responsible and contributing member of Great Harbour Cay community. Soul Fly strives to keep revenue on the island by sourcing food locally and minimizes waste. Simply put Soul Fly is committed to being a great neighbor.

Off The Water

Back Patio

Great Harbour Cay has a unique history as a destination. It was a celebrity hot spot in the 1960's with Bridget Bardot, Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks others taking extended stays at Great Harbour Cay.
The Soul Fly Lodge itself is nestled into the eastside of Great Harbour Cay overlooking the ocean with a short winding path carrying you to an idyllic Bahamian beach.  The Lodge sits about a mile north of what Travel & Leisure calls the 13th most beautiful beach in the world.
In addition, to the Carriearl Roost Restaurant Soul Fly has a 20’ by 50’ pool with plenty of comfortable seating that provides the perfect setting to swap fishing stories and relax at the end of a long day on the water.

I had the opportunity to fish Soul Fly Lodge in November and it is truly an amazing fishery! We had all the bonefish you could want and were able to fish everyday with many different wind conditions making it such a great bet even if the wind decides to blow from 3 different directions while you’re there! The mutton snappers on the flats and the edges made everyday an adventure and more then enough to target as well as stud yellow jacks. This is a great destination for the angler that’s looking for a large permit and since the permit flats are intermingled with the bonefish flats it’s not a far run to target them. The staff is tremendous and the pool/bar are ideal for reliving your day on the flats and rigging up your gear. Dinner was great every night with more than enough to fill you up and recharge for the next days outing. Looking forward to seeing Kyle and his team as soon as I can get away for a few days!
